The Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District Illicit Mining Team arrested on Wednesday, 24 March 2021, by two suspects for illegal possession of gold-bearing material and illegal possession of ammunition.
That was after members of the team received and operationalised information about the illegal possession of firearms. Consequently, a 33-year-old woman and a man aged 35, were nabbed after the police searched a house in Kanana near Orkney and found seven 9mm live ammunition and gold-bearing material worth R1.2 million. Meanwhile, both suspects are expected to appear soon in the Orkney Magistrates’ Court.
The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) has taken over the investigation of the case.
The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena lauded the team for the success and reiterated that police will continue to act strongly against those who commit illicit economic activities.
