On 13 April 2021 at 01:00, police officers from the Public Order Policing Unit received information of a robbery that took place at a supermarket in Fakazi area in Amanzimtoti.
On arrival at the scene, they were confronted by four armed suspects who opened fire towards them while fleeing the scene. During the ensuing shootout, one suspect injured his leg. Three suspects managed to escape unharmed and the injured man was taken to hospital under police guard.
A pistol with ammunition was recovered from the arrested suspect. Charges of attempted murder, robbery as well as illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition were opened at the Amanzimtoti police station for investigation. The 35-year-old suspect will appear in the Umbumbulu Magistrate’s Court once he is discharged from the hospital.
