Intensive investigation by a dedicated team of Calitzdorp police detectives and Attaqua K9 has led to the arrest of three suspects on Saturday, 17 April 2021 in connection with the death of Lourens De Villiers (66) who was brutally killed at Groenfontein, Calitzdorp earlier this week.
On Tuesday, 13 April 2021 at approximately 16:00 police responded to a complaint after family members struggled to get hold of the victim. On arrival they found the body of the man with serious injuries outside his residence. The victim was later declared dead by paramedics on scene. His vehicle, Hyundai bakkie, which was also stolen during the attack was later found abandoned at Matjiesfontein near Calitzdorp.
The manhunt for the suspects continued yesterday when a 14-year-old juvenile handed himself over to the police. He was immediately taken into custody.
Further investigation, on the same day, took the detection team to a house at Bergsig (Calitzdorp) where they recovered stolen items which belongs to the deceased. It included a music centre as well as keys of the recovered bakkie. This resulted in the arrest a 30-year-old man on charges of murder and possession of stolen property.
A 15-year-old juvenile was also arrested earlier today 18 April 2021 after he was also positively linked to the incident. He is also facing a charge of murder.
The trio remains in custody. They are scheduled to appear in the Calitzdorp Magistrates’ court on Monday, 19 April 2021 on the mentioned charges. More charges could be added as the investigation unfolds.
Western Cape police management thanked the members who worked around the clock to ensure that these perpetrators are arrested to face the consequences for their deeds.
