Hawks members from the Serious Organised Crime Unit working together with Durban Public Order Police arrested two suspects aged 28 and 37 for cash in transit heist which happened in Babanango last month.
On 29 March 2021, security guards were traveling from Nkandla to Melmoth when they were accosted by the suspects at gunpoint. The suspects fired shots towards the cash van and the driver was forced to stop. They robbed them of their service firearms and an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspects then fled the scene in their getaway motor vehicle.
A case of cash-in-transit robbery was reported at Babanango police station and the case docket was allocated to Hawks members from Richards Bay Serious Organised Crime unit for a thorough investigation. On 12 April 2021, five suspects were arrested and charged for the same cash-in-transit heist. They appeared in the Babanango Magistrate’s Court last week Wednesday and they were remanded in custody. Their case was postponed to 26 April 2021.
The two will also appear in the Babanango Magistrate’s Court once they are charged. Investigation continues and more arrests are expected.
The KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head, Major General Leseja Senona welcomed the arrest of the suspects and commended the investigating team.
