Alleged lawyer impersonator apprehended for fraud, extortion and corruption

A 30-year-old man is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court for fraud, extortion, and corruption allegations involving approximately R1.6 million worth of municipal water account on Friday, 23 April 2021.

It is alleged that the suspect contacted the complainant yesterday claiming that he was a lawyer and collecting debt on behalf of the City of Johannesburg. The suspect allegedly demanded an R10 000-00 gratification from the complainant to stop the water supply cut off at the residential flats in Yeoville for over R1.6 million owed for the municipal water bill.

The Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation in Johannesburg swiftly responded to the complaint and conducted a sting operation which resulted in the suspect being apprehended and the R10 000-00 in cash recovered.
