Lockdown II forces clamp down on violent crime in Cape Town hotspots

Members of the national Public Order Police attached to Lockdown II forces were in the vicinity of Nyanga Junction Mall on Saturday afternoon when they were alerted by community members to a robbery in progress at a fast foods outlet in the area.

When they approached the business they saw two suspects running away and pursued them. The suspects got into a Toyota Avanza vehicle that drove towards Govan Mbeki Road. The members caught up with the vehicle and arrested the two suspects and seized two imitation firearms.

The suspects aged 27 and 28 have been charged and will appear in court on Monday on charges of attempted business robbery and possession of imitation firearms.

Meanwhile the same Lockdown II forces pursued information on Friday evening in Khayelitsha following a house robbery in Lingelethu, where household items were taken. In Town Two, they arrested a 24-year-old suspect with a flat-screen television believed to have been stolen during the house robbery.

Further information led to the arrest of a second suspect who was apprehended also in Town Two. It was ascertained the 28-year-old suspect assisted the first suspect in the commission of the robbery. The suspects are also linked to other armed robbery cases in the area.

Both suspects will appear in court on Monday.

The Lockdown II forces comprise an additional national police contingent deployed to the Western Cape to deal with serious violent crimes in eight identified hotspots. The Lockdown II forces are set to continue executing targeted operations to create safety within identified Cape Town communities.
