A man believed to be part of a gang responsible for a spate of robberies was arrested by members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) in the Verulam CBD this morning (Sunday).
A RUSA Member was on patrol on Todd Street at approximately 08:47 when he was flagged down by a man who informed him that he had been robbed by three suspects for his Huawei P20 cellphone and ear phones. The victim provided a description of the robbers which was circulated to Reaction Officers responding to the scene.
A suspect matching the description was spotted fleeing on Moss Street. Officers pursued and apprehended him. He denied being part of the robbery but claimed that he was walking past when the man was being robbed.
The victim arrived on scene and confirmed that the individual in custody was the one who held onto him during the robbery. The stolen ear phones were also recovered in his possession.
The suspect is believed to part of a gang that is responsible for several robberies & stabbings that have occurred in the Verulam CBD in recent months. Their modus operandi is to approach unsuspecting pedestrians or motorists stationary at robots and rob them of their cellphones.
The suspect is currently detained at the Verulam SAPS.
