Woman convicted for SASSA grant fraud

Nonkuliseko Masimini (45) got convicted and sentenced by Mthatha Specialised Commercial Crimes Court for South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) grant fraud on Thursday, 27 May 2021.

It is reported that on 15 May 2010, Masimini applied for SASSA children’s grant using two different fraudulent identity documents for non-existing children at the Mthatha SASSA offices. She received the support grant for a period of five (5) years until SASSA officials became suspicious of her fraudulent activities and referred the matter for probing by the Mthatha Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team which culminated in her arrest on 12 October 2020. She was released on warning on the very same day.

Masimini made a series of court appearances before she was convicted and sentenced recently. She was given a five-year sentence wholly suspended provided she does not engage in such fraudulent activities during the time of the suspension. Masimini’s fraudulent conduct prejudiced SASSA cash to the value of R50 000.

The Provincial Head of the Hawks Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya once more lauded the Mthatha Serious Commercial Investigation team for the sterling job done.
