Gau-Med Emergency Services together with Alpha Security & Alarms – Pty Ltd Emergency Community Vehicle attended to the scene of a serious motor vehicle accident on the R21 just after 22:00pm.
On arrival we found one heavy motor vehicle transporting oranges had lost control and overturned. Two patients were heavily entrapped and required the jaws of life to extricate the patients.
The Gauteng Emergency Medical Services rescue team together with the fire department managed to extricate the one patient. Due to the mechanism of the accident the Fire & Rescue team were unable to extricate the second patient.
The decision was taken to activate a specialized trauma surgeon from Netcare Milpark Hospital to assist on scene. The surgeon took a decision to rapidly amputate both limbs below the knee on scene.
The patient was removed from the truck and airlifted with Netcare911 Emergency Medical Helicopter to a specialized hospital for further care.
Emergency Services were on the scene for a total of 7 hours before the patient was airlifted. We would like to thank all parties that were involved and worked together as a team.
