A 37-year-old male is in police custody for the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Zelna Baartman (30).
On Sunday, 27 June 2021, the decomposed body believed to be Ms. Baartman was discovered in a pit in Ezinyoka informal settlement in Valencia in Addo. Investigations revealed that the pit was dug for the construction of a latrine (toilet).
On Monday, 21 June 2021, Baartman’s relative reported her missing, after she disappeared the previous weekend. She was last seen in the company of the suspect on Friday, 18 June 2021.
A postmortem and DNA analysis will be conducted to confirm whether the recovered body is that of Baartman.
The arrested suspect is due to appear in the Addo Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 30 June 2021 on a charge of murder.
