How to cope with Grief and Loss during a Pandemic
Many people have experienced grief and/or loss during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Grief is a normal response to the loss of a loved one during, or after a disaster, illness or other traumatic event.
The pandemic has left hundreds of thousands of people alone in bereavement, unable to plan proper funerals for their loved ones or complete traditional rituals and burials.
The Covid-19 Pandemic, has brought about social-distancing measures that included restrictions on gatherings which denies thousands of people the opportunity to grieve with others and unable to get the social support from loved ones that is so needed during a time of loss.
This is especially true for people who are isolating alone or working at home as they may be without the comfort of family and friends who provides a release from grief. Some of us may feel cheated by online ceremonies as the feeling of closure isn’t felt as much as it would have been around the embraces of loved ones and support given by social connection. Postponed funerals, memorials and celebrations of life are being held, with hopes that the gatherings will ease feelings of guilt and, at last, open a path for closure.
