Firearms confiscated in two separate incidents

Alert police members swiftly arrested suspects following a robbery.

Three unknown armed suspects entered a shop in Maitland on Thursday, 19 Augustus 2021, at about 09:30, posing to be customers whilst a fourth suspect remained in the vehicle. The suspects then robbed the staff at gunpoint, after which they fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash including cigarettes and the owners cell phone. The Suspects were intercepted by police members in Voortrekker Road.

As the vehicle stopped, three suspects alighted from the vehicle and fled the scene on foot, attempting to evade arrest. A 9 mm pistol with ammunition was found inside the vehicle with the stolen cell phone and cigarettes. A 26-year-old man was arrested and detained on charges of possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition and possession of presumable stolen property.

In an unrelated case, a joint operation was conducted in Mfuleni on Thursday, 19 August 2021. Upon visiting the premises in Ethemba Crescent, a shotgun, a revolver with ammunition and two imitation firearms were confiscated. Two males were arrested and detained on charges of Possession of unlicensed firearms and possession of imitation firearms.
Once charged the suspects are expected to appear in the Cape Town and Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court respectively on the mentioned charges.
