Five suspects arrested for contact cable theft

Five suspects were arrested after Transnet contact cables worth R150 000-00 were allegedly stolen close to Windsorton.

On Monday, 23 August 2021 at about 22:30, the Fidelity Security Service and the SAPS Frances Baard Cluster Task Team responded to the contact cable theft complaint. The team started following up on the information and launched an intensive search for the suspects.

On Wednesday, 25 August 2021 at about 05:30 the team spotted a suspicious-looking Orange Ford Wildtrack bakkie close to Christiana and started following it onto the N12 North.

The bakkie started speeding off and the team contacted Wolmaransstad SAPS who intercepted the suspects in their area. The bakkie was stopped and searched and 400 kg of contact cables, two bolt cutters, 3 wooden droppers with rubber bands were found on the vehicle. The five male suspects were arrested and police also confiscated the bakkie as it was allegedly utilized in the commission of a crime.

The Frances Baard Cluster Commissioner, Maj Gen Johan Bean commended the Fidelity Security Service, the Frances Baard Cluster Task Team, and the Wolmaransstad SAPS for this outstanding teamwork that led to the apprehension and arrest of the suspects and confiscation of the stolen items. “The police will not allow criminals to damage essential infrastructure and will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that perpetrators are brought to justice, Bean said”.
