Abdur Razzar Shakir (25), was convicted and sentenced to a fine of R15 000-00 or 12 months imprisonment by the Upington Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 31 August 2021 for contravention of National Credit Act 34 of 2005.
Shakir was arrested in May 2020 after the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team received Information about the accused who was reportedly in possession of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) grant cards, bank cards, and identity documents of the community members in Upington. The accused unlawfully kept these credentials to guarantee payments for illegally advanced loans and supply of goods from the tuckshop which is in contravention of the National Credit Act.
