Madadeni High Court convicted and sentenced Njabulo Mvelase for the murder and robbery of Sergeant Wanderboy Khumalo which happened in the Escourt area in May 2019.
Sergeant Khumalo who was stationed at Estcourt Stock Theft Unit was shot and killed by Mvelase and his accomplice whilst he was off duty. They robbed him of his service pistol and his personal belongings. The accused fled the scene with Sergeant Khumalo’s vehicle which was later found abandoned in Weenen.
A case of murder was reported at Estcourt police station and the case docket was allocated to Hawks members from Pietermaritzburg Serious Organised Crime Investigation for further investigation.
In August 2019 Mvelase was arrested and his accomplice was fatally wounded during the shoot-out with police. He appeared in court several times until he was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, twenty years imprisonment for robbery, seven years imprisonment for pointing of a firearm, and five years’ imprisonment for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. His sentence will run concurrently.
