Roadrunners are as much part of road safety as are motorists. Runners are often injured, but this risk can be mitigated by training them to wear the proper clothing and shoes and know what’s going on while running. Runners need to be shown how to safeguard themselves from the risks of poor drivers and criminals.1
You must be in good health1
You can’t just decide one day that you are going to start running 5 km per day. Your body needs to be first used to running, starting with baby steps. To avoid any injuries, do a 5-minute warm-up, run in cool weather, and drink water before and during your run. If you are on any medication, consult your doctor first. Be careful if children are going to join you because they have a low tolerance to heat.
Dress in layers1
The inner layer can consist of thermal material, which removes sweat from the skin. The middle layer for the torso can consist of cotton, which absorbs moisture and insulates, whilst the outer nylon layer will protect the runner from rain and wind.
Beware of the sun1
Apply sunscreen, especially if you have sensitive skin, and wear a hat to protect your face and eyes. In addition, wear appropriate sunglasses to filter out the UV-A and UV-B rays and special goggles if conditions are very windy and dusty.
Who are you? 1
It’s essential to have on you your ID book, some money, and any information on your blood group, allergies, medical aid number, and a telephone number of next-of-kin. Don’t wear jewellery and carry a whistle.
Don’t be distracted1
Don’t listen to music while running, as you need to be alert to what is always happening around you.
Can other road travellers see you? 1
You must be highly visible when road running. Wearing light-coloured clothing (e.g., yellow) with reflective and fluorescent strips makes you stand out to other traffic. In this way, you are reducing the risk of any collision during the day or night.
What to do before your run1
Inform your family or friends when and where you are running. Always run on the roadside facing oncoming traffic and early in the morning to avoid dense traffic and fumes. Have a running partner join you for safety reasons, and choose a well-populated area known for its safety.
Protecting yourself on the road while running is vital, but are you also protecting your car with sufficient cover? Lack of cover or insufficient cover can seriously impact you financially.
