Earlier this afternoon members from Durban SAPS Search and Rescue, Durban K9 Search and Rescue, eThekwini Fire and Rescue, IPSS Medical Rescue, Emergi-Med Rescue, Netcare911, and Metro Police Search and Rescue members responded to a structural collapse in the La Lucia area.
A team of contractors was working at a residential property conducting renovations.
An iron beam that was being installed collapsed with a brick facia onto 5 of the workers.
Responders were able to extricate 4 of them and treated them for moderate to serious injuries sustained by the collapse. They were stabilised on the scene before being transported to the hospital by various ambulance services.
SAPS K9 Ghost and IPSS K9 Odi conducted a search amongst the rubble and debris and successfully indicated the location of the 5th victim who was declared deceased by paramedics on the scene.
The body was retrieved from the rubble and handed over to members from Durban North SAPS. Inquest docket opened.
