A 22 year old man died after he jumped off a bridge on the R102 in the vicinity of Canelands, KZN last night (Friday).
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received a call from a passing motorist at approximately 22:57 requesting assistance after two men were seen jumping off the bridge. Reaction Officers and RUSA Medics were immediately dispatched to the location and managed to locate the two individuals on a riverbank several meters below the bridge.
It was established that the two men and a female were walking home to Coniston, KZN after consuming alcohol in the Verulam CBD. As they approached the bridge the 22-year-old informed them that he could hear voices calling him. He then jumped over the guard rails and landed in the river next to the graveyard several meters below. His friends attempted to stop him and convince him that there were no voices but were unsuccessful. His male friend also jumped over the bridge and dragged the victim out of the river.
Medics stabilized the critically injured male on scene before transporting him to hospital where he demised shortly after his arrival.
