Remember that feeling you get when you saw that first scratch on your brand-new car? The first thing you want to do is restore the vehicle to its former beauty. Not so? The good news is that a minor scratch need not remain there, and this article will show you how to remove it from the car’s paintwork.1
What causes scratches? 1
Many things can cause scratches, such as parking too close to an object, vandalism, and branches from a tree. It would cost far too much to have it fixed by a panel beater when you spot a scratch. Instead, see below the various ways to remove scratches. However, please talk to your vehicle’s manufacturer, official dealership, and consult the vehicle manual before you put anything on your car’s paintwork.
Using toothpaste is a possibility1
First, test how deep the scratch is by sweeping your fingernail over the scratch. If your fingernail doesn’t stick in the groove, it means the scratch is a surface one, and using toothpaste may be a good choice. However, if the scratch is deep, you may have to use a professional product to remove it.
Thoroughly clean the scratched area1
Spray your car with water to remove any initial dirt, mud, or other particles. Then add special soap formulated for use on vehicles on a sponge and apply it to the surface. Spray the car again with water and dry using a soft, clean, dry cloth.
How much toothpaste should you use if at all? 1
Squeeze about a 2-cm bead of toothpaste onto a soft, damp microfibre towel to avoid creating more scratches. If the scratch is long and large, slightly more toothpaste may be needed. Although using whitening toothpaste is optimal, any brand of toothpaste will do.
How to apply the toothpaste if needed1
With the toothpaste on the cloth, gently rub over the scratched area by moving your hand in small circles. Keep on doing this until the toothpaste is spread evenly over the surface. Apply some pressure while doing this, but not excessively so.
Wash off all the toothpaste1
Thoroughly wash the area with water, removing all the toothpaste still on the surface. Next, use a soft microfibre cloth to dry the area. If you still see some excess toothpaste, use the cloth to wipe it off.
Repeat the cleaning cycle no more than twice1
The first attempt may not have been sufficient to remove the scratch, so repeat the cycle with the toothpaste. After cleaning the area, see if the scratch has gone. If not, repeat one more time. After each application of cleaning the area, ensure before repeating the next cycle that the paintwork is not getting affected.
What about using a professional product? 1
First, a reminder, please get appropriate, professional advice about any scratch-removal product you intend to use. You don’t want to make matters worse. Then, repeat the cleaning part of the above cycle, apply the product to a microfibre cloth and strictly follow the instructions.
Your car obtaining scratches is one thing, but what if your car is damaged in an accident? Why not have peace of mind and get affordable car insurance that includes unique benefits like fixed premiums* and a reduce to zero excess* with PMD? T’s and C’s apply.
