Joint awareness campaign against copper theft and infrastructure vandalism

The Northern Cape SAPS Provincial Flash (Second Hand Goods) held a joint awareness campaign in partnership with Transnet, Eskom (Distribution), Telkom, Petra Mining, Customs, Isidingo Security, Kimberley Flash, and Corporate Communication to raise awareness with regards to vandalism of essential infrastructure and theft of copper cables, selling and buying stolen goods.

The focus of the awareness campaign was to sensitise communities to refrain from selling stolen goods including copper cables to second-hand goods dealers, such as scrap metal dealers.

Theft and damage of essential infrastructure continue to cripple the economy of the country.

The campaign was held on Tuesday, 22 February 2022 in Kimberley. More than 500 pamphlets with awareness information were distributed. A compliance inspection was conducted at a local scrap dealer.

Inspections were conducted on vehicles dropping off scrap metals at scrap metal dealers’ premises. Fines were issued to motorists for driving vehicles without valid license discs.
