A joint operation was held by police officers from various units in Verulam yesterday at 16:30 when members received information about suspects carrying firearms at Waterloo.
The team proceeded to the location and a taxi with suspects was spotted in Bat Road in Waterloo. When the taxi stopped to drop off passengers, five men alighted from the taxi. Upon seeing the police officers, the suspects opened fire at the police. During the exchange of gunfire, one of the suspects was shot and wounded. He was searched and police found a pistol with ammunition in his possession.
Another suspect was found in possession of a revolver. Five suspects aged between 21 and 30 were placed under arrest. The arrested suspects will be profiled to establish any linkages to other serious cases reported in Verulam and surrounding areas. The firearms that were seized will be subjected to ballistic testing. The suspects are due to appear before the Verulam Magistrate’s Court today.
