VRSEC and various other armed reaction units as well as SAPS responded to reports of an alleged suspect brandishing a firearm and pointing it at VRMED and Trauma response paramedics while they were attending to a collision in Pres Paul Kruger road in Universitas, Bloemfontein.
A vigilant bystander and a tow trucker from cobra towing spotted the individual approaching the scene and warned the rest who took cover behind emergency vehicles while waiting for VRSEC and SAPS for backup. The alleged suspect was apprehended by SAPS and found to have a toy gun in his possession. It is alleged that the suspect had robbed students moments before arriving at the accident scene. Universitas is currently experiencing a high volume of a crime involving armed robberies. The suspect is currently in police custody and will appear in court on relevant charges.
