Suspects due to appear in court for firearms and ammunition charges

On 10 May 2022, at about 13:00, members attached to Claremont SAPS were on duty when they received a tip-off about a pupil with a firearm at a school in Claremont. The members proceeded to the school and searched all the males in the mentioned classroom and their belongings, but could not find anything.

After they left the school, they received a call to say that a pistol was found hidden behind a compartment in the room next door. They returned and retrieved the firearm from where it was found. Further investigation led them to a 19-year-old learner who admitted that he was the one with the firearm. He was subsequently arrested for the possession of a prohibited firearm. A firearm with no serial was seized and handed in as an exhibit.

Once charged, the suspect is expected to make a court appearance in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on the mentioned charge.

In an unrelated matter on Tuesday, 10 May 2022, at about 14:15, members of the Provincial Extortion Task Team followed up on information about stolen goods and ammunition that was hidden at premises in Magatya Street, Lwandle, Strand. The members acted swiftly, and on arrival at the house conducted a search where they found ammunition, a magazine, a magazine loader, and a firearm case. A 34-year-old suspect was arrested for the illegal possession of ammunition.

Once charged the suspect is due to make a court appearance in the Strand Magistrate’s Court.

On 10 May 2022, at about 10:00, Operation Lockdown II members and Cape Town Organised Crime Unit members conducted a joint operation and managed to arrest two suspects both aged 26 for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

According to reports, members followed up on information about a vehicle traveling from Mfuleni to Khayelitsha. They spotted the vehicle pulled it over and searched it. The members found the occupants in possession of the firearms and arrested them.

The suspects are due to appear in court once charged.
