Members of the community barricaded the entrance of a school preventing educators from leaving the premises after two robbery suspects were locked in a classroom after being attacked by a mob in Osindisweni – KZN.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received a call for assistance at 08:47 from an educator from Suleman Patel Secondary School. Reaction Officers were immediately dispatched and on arrival located a crowd of approximately 50 people armed with pangas and sticks protesting at the entrance.
They informed Reaction Officers that two men responsible for a spate of robberies in the area attempted to snatch a cellphone from a learner as he was walking to school this morning. Other pupils confronted the two suspects and began assaulting them. Residents heard of the incident and quickly mobilised to the scene however upon their arrival the suspects managed to flee into the school where educators locked them in a classroom. Learners were dismissed early as
they were also threatened to join the community in the attack on both men.
The Ndwedwe SAPS arrived shortly thereafter and removed both suspects aged 23 and 25 from the premises.
