Armed suspects sought following shooting incident

The SAPS in the Eastern Cape has launched a manhunt for two unidentified suspects who shot and injured six people and killed one on Tuesday, 17 May 2022 at Mdantsane Highway taxi rank.

It is reported that at about 17:00, at least two unknown male suspects armed with firearms started shooting at a white Hyundai sedan with two occupants. As a result, one of the two occupants, aged 47, was fatally wounded, whilst another sustained gunshot wounds in the upper body.

The information further indicates that five other people were hit by stray bullets. A total of six victims aged between 25 and 30 were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

Police are investigating a murder case with six counts of attempted murder. No arrest has been made at this stage. The circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation. The police will not make speculations about the motive behind the incident.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene has expressed shock at the shooting and immediately ordered the speedy arrest of those responsible for the broad daylight shooting of the innocent people. “Criminals will not be allowed to rule and terrorize responsible citizens on our watch. We shall not rest until they are found.” Lt Gen Mene said.
