The public is urged to verify information prior to requesting assistance from Law Enforcement.
This afternoon (Wednesday) at approximately 17:16, Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received multiple calls from the public reporting an armed robbery in progress at a mosque on Azad Lane in Belvedere – KZN.
All available Reaction Officers from Tongaat and Ballito were immediately dispatched to the scene. On arrival, it was confirmed by the Moulana (Priest) that no robbery occurred on the premises.
Upon further investigation it was established that a voice note was circulated by a resident of Belvedere in Tongaat – KZN on a WhatsApp community group. A man was requesting assistance after five armed suspects allegedly held up the mosque. He confirmed in the voice note that he was outside the mosque at the time of the robbery.
Several members of the group which included an Off Duty Policeman thereafter contacted RUSA for assistance reporting the crime in progress.
