Members of Johannesburg Central police station in conjunction with Johannesburg Metro Police Department apprehended a 22-year-old male for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition at Pritchard Street on Sunday, 28 August 2022 at 22:00.
Police were busy with their routine crime prevention duties when they saw a suspicious male at the corners of Goud and Jeppe Street. When he saw the police he tried to run away but he was cornered; police recovered an unlicensed firearm with no serial number and live ammunition. He failed to produce a license to possess a firearm.
The firearm will be subjected to ballistic testing to ascertain if it was used in the commission of other serious and violent crimes. The investigation is underway and the suspect will be appearing in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 30 August 2022.
Johannesburg Central Station Commander Brigadier Perumal commended the good work done by the police in ensuring that unlicensed firearms are confiscated from wrongful hands. He elaborated further that these firearms are used to rob people, and businesses and even kill innocent people.
