How to survive a rollover car accident

All South African motorists, bikers and truck drivers should always obey the rules of the road to help make motoring as safe as possible. Maintaining roadworthy vehicles at all times is essential too. Nevertheless, unfortunately, accidents do happen. Also, despite the increased safety of our modern cars, serious incidents still occur, including rollover car accidents. The term ‘rollover’ means the car turns over onto its roof or side after losing control over a road. Even though such accidents are infrequent, they are nonetheless extremely dangerous.1

What causes rollover accidents?

The majority of all rollover accidents could involve only one car. 1 Human error is the main cause and involves drowsiness, recklessness, and carelessness.1

What are the other reasons for rollover accidents?

Driving on uneven roads or in bad weather or driving a car with a high centre of gravity. 1  You may be going to help a friend to move but avoid piling many suitcases on your car’s roof rack, which will increase the centre of gravity. 1  Finally, driving with smooth tyres can be another cause. Many rollover accidents could happen on rural dirt roads. 1  This may be due to the greater chance of sliding due to the lack of grip. 1

Prevention is better than cure

So the saying goes – prevention is much better than trying to survive a rollover accident. 1  You can minimise the risk by not overloading your car and ensuring that all luggage is fixed and secure. 1  For instance, an unsecured heavy load in a bakkie can slide to one side when going around a corner and destabilise the entire vehicle. 1  Always obey the speed limit when approaching a corner and go even slower under adverse weather conditions. 1  Crucial to remember is that when you start to roll to your left, turn your wheel to the left. 1

What to do when you start to roll1

You need to cross your arms and take hold of your opposite shoulders, thus supporting your head and neck, and protecting your chin. 1  Don’t push against the steering wheel or floor as this will be futile during the uncontrollable movement of the car. 1  But, if you do, it will place you in even greater danger. 1  When the vehicle has come to a rest, immediately switch off the engine, unbuckle your safety belt, and exit either through the door or window. 1  Try to get help as soon as possible, such as Netcare 911 on 084 124. Then, contact your insurer’s roadside assistance and towing service. 1
