The members of the Economic Infrastructure Task Team conducted compliance inspections at scrapyards in Lawndale, Strand on Monday, 07 November 2022.
This led to the discovery of underground copper and aluminum cables in a locked container in one of the scrapyards.
When the owner of the establishment could not produce documentation, he was arrested and detained at Strand SAPS.
A roll of copper and aluminum weighing 54kg and another one weighing 89kg were confiscated.
The City of Cape Town identified the underground cables as theirs.
The 65-year-old male suspect will appear in the Strand Magistrate’s Court, once he has been charged.
The team continued with the inspections and issued admission of guilt fines to two illegal scrapyards in the area for not being compliant with the Secondhand Goods Act Section 25.
