A two-year-old female sustained electrical burns after she grabbed onto an illegal electricity connection in Mawotana – KZN a short while ago (Friday).
Residents contacted Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) at approximately 14:58 requesting assistance for the child. According to the caller, the girl was unresponsive and they could not confirm if she had been killed.
Available Reaction Officers and RUSA Medics were dispatched to the scene and on arrival found the minor being carried by her aunt who stated that the girl had regained consciousness a short while prior to the arrival of First Responders.
Upon examination, the female was found to have suffered electrical burns to her hands. Her aunt and uncle complained that the child was left in the care of her 8-year-old sister while their mother consumed alcohol at a tavern in the area. Both children were playing on a neighbour’s property when the girl grabbed onto an illegal electricity connection.
Residents searched for their mother without success.
