Four suspects arrested, large quantity of copper cables recovered in Thabong

Members of Public Order Policing were busy with their routine visible Policing and crime prevention patrols in Welkom when they noticed a suspicious vehicle near Bongani Hospital intersection on 17 March 2023 at about 10:30.

The vehicle was followed towards Mothusi road where police flagged the driver to stop however the driver sped off. Members of Public Order Police unit gave chase and managed to intercept the vehicle near Vuyo Charles Stadium in Thabong. The occupants were ordered to alight from the vehicle and a search was conducted.

Upon searching the vehicle, a red Golf with Free State registration numbers, copper cable and eight copper sheet weighing 131, 5 kg were found inside the boot and on the rear seat. The occupants of the vehicle could not provide the SAPS members with proper documents for the possession of these copper cable.

The four suspects aged 28, 29, 36 and 38 were arrested for possession of suspected stolen copper cable. They will appear in Welkom Magistrate’s Court on 20 March 2023.

The Acting District Commissioner of Lejweleputswa, Brigadier Mzondi Mojafi applauded members of Welkom POP for their vigilance that lead to the arrest of the suspects and the recovery of the copper cable.
