SAPS recover firearm and arrest suspects: Gqeberha

The SAPS Nelson Mandela Bay District arrested five suspects on charges ranging from possession of prohibited firearms, illegal possession of ammunition, assault (attack on police) and possession of drugs on Thursday, 11 May 2023, in Summerstrand.

It is alleged that at approximately 15:30, SAPS members followed up on information about suspects in possession of illegal firearms. While in Marine Drive in Summerstrand, members confronted a group of approximately 20 to 30 people. The group became hostile towards the police and threatened the members with violence. One person started to run away but was immediately apprehended. A .22 baby Browning firearm and ammunition were confiscated.

The group of people became aggressive and when back up arrived, five suspects were arrested on the following charges, one suspect (29) was arrested for the possession of prohibited firearm and illegal possession of ammunition, three suspects aged between 26 and 32 were arrested for assault (attack on police) and one suspect (21) was arrested on a charge of possession of drugs.

The suspect that was arrested for possession of drugs appeared in the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court today while the remaining four suspects will appear in the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 15 May 2023.
