Operation Shanela, the multi-disciplinary high density operation which commenced from Monday, 29 May 2023 till Sunday 04 June 2023 with a sharp focus on the reduction of contact and violent crimes in crime hotspots nets a multitude of successes.
Actions and police activities executed during the operations included, vehicle check points (VCP’s), stop and searches, foot and vehicle patrols, compliance inspections, drugs and other commodities smuggling.
Seventy three (73) VCP’s and Eleven (11) roadblocks were held across the province where in 3847 vehicles and 7890 persons were stopped and searched.
1388 Compliance inspections were executed at second-hand dealers, liquor premisses, formal and informal businesses as well as farms.
Numerous operational successes were achieved:
769 suspects were arrested for Murder, attempted murder, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, theft, dealing and possession of drugs and undocumented immigrants. 39 illegal firearms were also seized during disruptive actions
Police actions also resulted in the seizure of dagga worth R1,1 million in Kakamas , which seen 2 males arrested at a hiking spot.
116 Wanted suspects were traced and brought to book for evading court appearances and contravention of court orders.
Police confiscated a number of alcoholic beverages, drugs, vehicle parts and cash that is believed to be the proceeds of crime.
The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lt General Koliswa Otola commended the efforts of all involved and encouraged the public to be vigilant and report all criminal incidence to the police. She also indicated that the police will continue to stamp down the authority of the state in an endeavour to reclaim communities from criminals and restore the trust of the public in the police.
