The Buffalo City Metro is issuing a warning to beach goers to be extra careful when taking to the shores this winter season.
A passing sardine rush is attracting predators who are following it as it goes past the BCM coastline.
This possibility explains a shark attack that took place in Nahoon yesterday.
Fortunately, the encounter between the paddler and the shark only left the surf ski broken with no injuries.
The Metro closed off the Nahoon beach yesterday as a precaution following the sighting, however this is just a temporary safety measure.
BCM Aquarium Manager Siani Tinely says the hive of is normal at this time of the year.
“It comes with seabird activity and mammals such as dolphins, seals including predators like sharks.” Tinely said.
Beachgoers are advised that when they spotted birds diving into the ocean, chances are that sardines are passing by and there is predator activity.
BCM Beaches and Recreation Manager Allen Zealand said the beach closure wasn’t going to be long and most likely will be lifted today.
