The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has welcomed the arrest of two suspects, aged 34 and 38, who allegedly committed a business robbery at Sekgopo Post Office on Tuesday, 04 July 2023 at around 13:00.
According to information, a group of heavily armed suspects went into a Post Office situated inside a Fuel station at Mojeketla village in Ga-Sekgopo and demanded money from the employees.
These suspects allegedly instructed the manager on duty through a glass counter (pay point) to open the office door at gun point. They opened, and two of the suspects entered and further instructed the manager to open the safe.
They then robbed the post office of an undisclosed amount of money. When they were about to flee the scene with a getaway vehicle, a black VW Polo, Police had already arrived and a shootout ensued between the Police and the suspects. One suspect was cornered and arrested in the area. Another suspect was later arrested the same day at about 17:00 after he was apprehended by community members who handed the suspect over to police.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the black VW Polo utilised by the suspects was linked to a hijacking incident on Monday 03 July 2023 at Maake policing area.
“We highly appreciate the involvement of the community members, who assisted the Police to apprehend the suspects and the Police team for acting swiftly on information received,” said Lieutenant General Hadebe.
The arrested suspects will appear before Bolobedu Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 06 July 2023 facing charges of business robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms.
