Police confiscates assault rifles and ammunition in Nyanga

Members attached to the National Intervention Unit, Cape Town, conducted an Intelligence driven operation on Thursday, 20 July 2023, in Siyo Square Zwelitsha, in Nyanga. The police members did a stakeout on the premises where after they operationalised the information at their disposal and proceeded to execute a search and seizure operation on the identified premises.

The members searched the premises and confiscated two rifles, one R5 rifle with serial filled off, three 5.56 loose rounds hidden in socks, one AK 47 rifle with 20 rounds and one rifle scope Leipold Mark4. The firearms and ammunition were handed in as exhibits. Firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to determine if it was used in the commission of other offences.

A 32-year-old male was arrested. He is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate court once charged.

Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Patekile commended the members and says that firearms are a massive contributor to violent crimes and we will do everything possible to rid the streets of these dangerous weapons.
