The Police in Limpopo have intensified operations to combat illegal mining activities and associated crimes in the Province. This follows the arrest of three more suspected illegal miners today, Tuesday 29 August 2023 at about 08h00 at Mecklenburg in Sekhukhune District.
The suspects were arrested during the heightened operations conducted by members of Sekhukhune District Illegal Mining Task team.The suspects consisting of two females and one male are believed to be part of a group involved in illicit mining activities and mining chrome on the mountain in GaPhasha Village.
Police seized the following mining equipment: 53 jackhammers; 20 generators; 24 drill beats; 11 wheelbarrows; 6 picks; 3 hammers and 3 shovels.
The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in LImpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has commended this team of members for the excellent work and said Police’ are committed to upholding the law and protecting the environment from these unlawful activities.
The three suspects who are all illegal immigrants aged between 31 and 40 will appear before the Mecklenburg Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, Wednesday 30 August 2023 on charges of Illegal Mining and Contravention of the Immigration Act.
