On Tuesday 12 September 2023, between 07:30 and 10:30 the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Social Crime Prevention Unit (SCPU) Officers, in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies, conducted a school search at Geluksdal Secondary school and dangerous weapons, were seized.
There are reports that not long, a scholar lost his life within the schools’ premises, due to fighting and alleged gangsterism. Law Enforcers including the South African Police Service (SAPS), saw a great need to visit the school, to conduct the high visibility operation. The similar intervention curbed the high number of fighting outbreaks in previous troubled schools, in and around the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE). During the thorough search, Officers found cigarettes, Rizlias, Pain tablets, condoms, and scissors. Scholars were workshopped briefly by Officers, about gangsterism and the negative effects with impact, it has on the youth. The consequences of getting involved into gangsterism and crime, was highlighted and emphasized.
All the confiscated items, found abandoned in toilets and within the schools’ grounds, were handed in at the Tsakane Police Station. Few apprentices, found with disturbing substances, were marched to the principal’s office, for the necessary disciplinary action, under the schools Act.
The EMPD applauds the partnership, with other role players such as the Community Policing Forum (CPF) and Community Anti-Crime Units, to promote safer schools in the city.
