In concerted efforts to deal with firearms and drugs that generates serious and violent crime which threatens the safety of communities, members of the police deployed in the Garden Route District arrested two suspects after unlicensed firearms were found in their possession in two unrelated incidents.
On Sunday, 26 November 2023 at about 01:40 Thembalethu police conducted patrols in crime hotspot areas when they noticed a suspicious looking man. They swiftly approached the man and upon searching him, found an unlicensed firearm in his possession. The police members confiscated the firearm and arrested the man.
Later the same day at about 10:45, members deployed at Kwanokuthula acted on information of illegal activity at a house at Sishuba Street, Kwanokuthula in Plettenberg Bay. On arrival at the premises the vigilant members proceeded with a search of a shack behind the main house. They found eight rounds of ammunition, a firearm as well of small quantities of tik and mandrax tablets in possession of the two occupants. The man (33) and woman (21) were both arrested on charges relating to the unlawful possession of the firearm, ammunition and drugs.
All arrested suspects are being remanded in police custody. They will appear in Thembalethu and Plettenberg Bay Magistrates’ Courts once charged.
Western Cape police management lauded the members for their swift response to remove unlicensed firearms from the streets.
