Firearms remain a weapon of choice in most serious and violent crimes committed in Gauteng. As an effort to deal with the proliferation of firearms and to remove them from the streets of Gauteng, the law enforcement strive to make inroads in seizing these weapons and arresting those found in possession of it.
On 27 November 2023, the Vehicle Identification Service together with Mamelodi West Crime prevention team operationalised intelligence information about suspects in possession of stolen vehicle and firearms.
The team swiftly responded and upon searching the said premises, they found nine firearms of which seven were pistols, two rifles with more than 500 live rounds of ammunition and a VW Polo vehicle reportedly stolen during a house robbery on 26 Nevember 2023 at Silverton.
Three suspects were arrested and are expected to appear before court soon on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and possession of suspected stolen motor vehicle.
