Robbery suspects impersonating police officers arrested after a collision

Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) information gathering unit members conducted an investigation regarding a complaint about suspects who were impersonating police officers in the Brooklyn and Sunnyside areas. The suspects would stop people, search them and then rob them of their belongings.

While conducting patrols on Wednesday, 13 December 2023, in the Brooklyn area, they were approached by a person who alerted the officers that he had just been robbed by two suspects who presented themselves as police. They were driving a white Toyota Etios. The officers responded swiftly and located the vehicle in Sunnyside. They tried to stop the vehicle but the suspects fled. Then a pursuit ensued.

While in pursuit, the suspects’ vehicle crashed into another vehicle and they were apprehended. Inside the suspects’ vehicle were cell phones, laptops and fraudulent police identification cards.

The two suspects were arrested for common robbery and possession of stolen property.

The licence disc on the suspects’ vehicle did not correspond to the number plate. It was later discovered that the vehicle belonged to a person in the Johannesburg area and was also used in the commission of other crimes.
