The Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Nomthetheleli Mene brought the curtain down on the roadshow, which was mainly to induct the newly appointed Constables into the South African Police Service family.
A successful roadshow was strategically planned, and it coincided with the festive season operations, which are still taking place throughout the province.
On Tuesday, 09 January 2023, Lt Gen Mene ended her roadshow in the Joe Gqabi District, where she started by addressing approximately 200 new constables at the SAPS Sports Club Hall in Aliwal North.
Lt Gen Mene warned the new Constables not to be involved in corruption, misuse of state resources such as vehicles. “I do not want to receive any complaint of corruption or any other misconduct from your group of police officials. As senior managers, we took time to address you on the number of challenges, which had unfortunately derailed some of our colleagues from the path, and eventually saw some of them languishing in jail,” added Lt Gen Mene.
The day, even though there were moments of heavy rain, but that did not dampen the spirit of pur new foot soldiers, who were deployed in the CBD, and other hotspot areas which they patrolled with senior managers, so as to enhance police visibility. Several roadblocks were also manned in Joe Gqabi and Chris Hani Districts.
Several motorists were fined for traffic offences ranging from driving without a licence to overloading, with fines valued around R15 000 in the two districts. During those operations, the two districts reported no serious criminal cases.
From the start of the Festive Season operations, the Provincial Commissioner and with all her senior managers played an active role in overseeing all the operations throughout the province, as the Operation Shanela was running concurrently with the Festive Season Operations.
Their hands-on approach not only enhanced operational efficiency, but also serves as an impetus to heighten sense of morale among police members.
Eastern Cape received a total of 987 new Constables, who were having their first hand experience of being involved in operations.
