The Police in Limpopo arrested 1 438 suspects during operation Kukula (Shanela) conducted from 22 January to 28 January 2024.
The SAPS was joined by other stakeholders, including private security as well as sector departments across the province. The suspects in all the five districts were arrested for charges including murder, attempted murder, robberies, rape, sexual offenses, assaults, burglaries, fraud, arson, malicious damage to property, and drug related cases.
These high-density operations were executed through roadblocks, stop and search, compliance inspections at liquor premises, and second-hand dealers, amongst other duties.
During the operations, these multi-disciplinary forces recovered 15 firearms, eight stolen or hijacked vehicles, 25 knives, 26 dangerous weapons, 21 541 counterfeit cigarettes sticks and 610 368.75ml of liquor.
The Police further arrested 63 suspects for cases related to drugs. They confiscated 4322.933 grams of dagga, two dagga plants, three grams of crystal meth, three grams of nyaope, and 11 grams of crack cocaine or rocks.
Moreover, 11 suspects were nabbed for rape cases, and seven for sexual offenses and 15 for transgression of Domestic Violence Act.
264 reports of domestic violence were attended, and 282 protection orders were served.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the Police in Limpopo, Major General Jan Scheepers, has applauded all the members, sector departments as well as private security, who participated in the operations and, for their endless efforts as they ensure that the citizens of this province are safe.
The suspects have started to appear before various Magistrate’s courts across the province.
