In response to a violent incident reported last night, Wednesday 06 March 2024 at about 20:00, police in Mokopane have swiftly apprehended a 26-year-old male suspect after he allegedly stabbed to death a 50-year-old man at Mokopane Extension 19.
The deceased was reportedly involved in an altercation with the suspect before the fatal incident occurred. The suspect and his three friends allegedly met the victim and his wife on the street and the victim reprimanded the suspect for calling him by his first name. The suspect and his friends allegedly assaulted the victim and one of them produced a knife stabbed him. The victim’s wife tried to intervene, but she was also assaulted. She then ran away to get assistance.
Police and emergency services responded to the scene, and the victim was certified dead.
The suspect was swiftly arrested at his residence. Three men aged between 18 and 22 were also taken in for questioning regarding the incident after they handed themselves to the police.
As the investigation continues, the Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe urges the community members to remain calm and allow the legal process to unfold. “We understand the pain and anger that comes with such loss, but we appeal to everyone to trust the justice system and refrain from taking matters into their own hands,” emphasized Lieutenant General Hadebe.
The suspect is expected to appear before Mokopane Magistrate’s Court soon on a charge of murder, while police investigations continue regarding the other three individuals.
