Garden Route Disaster Management Flood Update 1

Due to the severe weather conditions, including heavy rain and wind, the following update is issued regarding the status quo in the Garden Route.

Rainfall
Rainfall received over the last 24 hours – up to 8:00 this morning:
• George Tierkop – 158mm
• Wilderness – 163mm
• Knysna – 79mm
• Plett – 31mm
• Oudtshoorn – 65mm
• Mossel Bay – 102mm
• Ladismith – 40mm

Dam levels
Dams levels are rising very quickly and current levels are as follows:
• Duiwenhoks – 125%
• Calitzdorp Dam – 95%
• Oukloof Dam – 85%
• Gamka Dam – 77%
• Kamanassie – 73%
• Wolwedans – 100% overflowing
• Garden Route – 100%

Roads Closures
• Low lying areas next to the Touwriver in Wilderness.
• Kaaimans River is in flood, but no roads affected.
• Prince River in flood – road closures North of Ladismith, but alternative routes are open.
• Meiringspoort (Grootrivier) – Rockfalls in some areas and water flooding some parts of the road (road closed).
• George – Outeniqua Pass (Was closed early this morning, but subsequently re-opened).
• Swartberg Pass – closed due to slippery road conditions.
• Moddenaarskraal – closed
• Waboomskraal – one access road closed, but alternative road is availiable.

Garden Route Roads Services are busy assessing the status quo of rural roads and updates will be provided daily at 9:00/12:00, as well as 15:00.

Education
Schools are being assessed by the Department of Education.

Housing
Local Municipal housing sections are busy with assessments to determine if emergency sheltering is required.

Next update can be expected around 15:00 today.
