The members of the Provincial Anti-Smuggling Task Team in collaboration with external security forces that comprised of Reflex Anti-Hijacking Security together with Tshimollo Security and Investigation made a breakthrough following the apprehension of a 44-year-old male suspect under Westernburg policing area on Thursday, 18 April 2024 at about 20:00.
The suspect was arrested in connection with a suspected stolen Toyota Fortuner.
Police were alerted about a stolen motor vehicle that was traveling along the R101 public road in Gauteng province and destined to be smuggled out of the Republic of South Africa through Beitbridge, Port of Entry (POE) in Limpopo province.
A joint operation was executed and the motor vehicle fitting the description was positively spotted driving at a high speed while passing Shell Ultra City Filling station outside Polokwane.
A car chase ensued between the suspect and Operational Teams until he was compelled to stop next to Polokwane Traffic Weighbridge and ultimately nabbed on the spot.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the motor vehicle valued at R900 000 was reported stolen at Springs policing precinct in Gauteng province on Tuesday, 16 April 2024.
A 44-year-old male suspect is expected to appear before Polokwane Magistrate court on Monday 22 April 2024 facing a charge of possession of suspected stolen motor vehicle, reckless and negligent driving.
Police investigations are continuing.
