The collaborative efforts of our police officers in executing a multi-disciplinary operation that resulted in the confiscation of counterfeit goods, firearms, and drugs across Nelson Mandela Bay, is highly commendable.
The operation which started on 02 May 2024 until 03 May 2024, included many role players from SAPS and other departments that clamped down on unsuspecting shop owners and drug dealers in the Humewood, Walmer and Gelvandale areas.
On 02 May 2024, the team confiscated a total of 301 counterfeit electronic goods to the value of R105 000 from a shop at a mall in Humewood. An enquiry docket was opened for investigation. At another store, counterfeit goods which included allergy tablets, headache pills and pregnancy test kits to the value of R3100 were also seized. In Walmer, two hijacked vehicles, a Mercedes Benz and an Opel Corsa were recovered. The vehicles were stolen in Kwazakele and Motherwell in April and March respectively. Also, 3 gas pistols, a 9mm pistol, various brands of cigarettes and cellphones were seized.
Two suspects were arrested and detained – one on possession of stolen motor vehicles, possession of unlicensed firearm and possession of suspected stolen property while the other was detained on a charge of unlawful possession of ammunition and a firearm magazine. Continuation of the operation resulted in the seizure of drugs (cocaine, mandrax and dagga) and two illegal firearms at a house in Fitchard Street in Helenvale. Cocaine, mandrax and tik were also confiscated at a house in Dinsmore Street in Shauderville. No arrests were made in either of the confiscations.
Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Maj Gen Vuyisile Ncata added that Operation Shanela emphasises the commitment of law enforcement in combating illegal activities that threaten the safety and well-being of our communities. ‘The seizure of counterfeit goods disrupts illicit markets, protecting consumers from substandard and potentially dangerous products. Additionally, the removal of firearms and drugs from our streets contributes to the overall reduction of violent crime and drug-related incidents. We remain steadfast in our mission to uphold the law and keep our communities safe,’ added Maj Gen Ncata.
