KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Sipho Hlomuka today handed over two contractors in Ward 11, Nkandla Local Municipality.
MEC Hlomuka first handed over the contractor for the rehabilitation of Main Road P90.
Main Road P90 is approximately 28 kilometres from the intersection of P50/3. The portion of this project only focuses on the section between kilometre 0.0 and kilometre 14.0.
The road serves the community with many amenities and is faced with high traffic in the form of public transport, emergency vehicles and privately-owned vehicles. Such amenities include schools and clinics or hospitals.
The rehabilitation of Main Road P90 entails the milling of the existing layer works and reconstruction from the roadbed at an estimated cost of R423 million. More than 80 employment opportunities are expected to be created for the duration of the project.
MEC Hlomuka then later introduced the zonal contractor for the routine and safety maintenance on various roads transversing through many wards under the Nkandla Local Municipality.
This project covers different activities within the Nkandla Local Municipality such as betterment and re-gravelling, blading, blacktop patching, guardrails, pipe installation and headwalls, gabion protection, signs and roadmaking.
The project will run for a period of 36 months (3 years) with the total cost of the project estimated to cost approximately R110 million. More than 300 jobs will be created.
The total output to be achieved on this project is 42 km of Betterment and re-gravelling under Nkandla Local Municipality.
MEC Hlomuka concluded his day by engaging the local community at KwaMtshili in Ward 11 where he was joined by the Member of Parliament, Honourable Radebe, Local House Traditional Leadership, Inkosi uDlomo and izinduna, local councillors and senior officials.
