The dedication of members attached to Operation Shanela and Maitland Flying Squad have once again demonstrated their unwavering commitment to raid the streets of Illegal firearms, ammunition and drugs to ensure safety in communities.
On Tuesday 21 May 2024, at approximately 22:00, members received information pertaining illegal firearms and drugs in Thamsanqa Rhobisana Street, Samora Machel. The members operationalised the information and searched the mentioned premises upon which an AK 47 riffle and ammunition were found and seized. Members also discovered more AK 47 rounds in a Tupperware container, five grams of tik, gun powder, 141 mandrax tablets and an undisclosed amount of cash believed to be the proceeds of crime.
The confiscated firearm and drugs resulted in the detention of four males aged between 36 and 40 on a charge of possession of prohibited firearm and ammunition as well as dealing in drugs.
In an unrelated matter, in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday, 22 May 2024) members followed up information received about a car that was hijacked and being spotted in the Khayelitsha area. Upon arrival at the address they recovered a Kia LDV that was hijacked in Kleinvlei area. Two suspects were apprehended and a 9 mm pistol, of which the serial number was removed was found on one of the suspects. The two adult males were detained at Khayelitsha SAPS on charges of possession of a hijacked vehicle and a prohibited firearm and ammunition.
The suspects will appear in the Athlone and Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court on the mentioned charges, once charged.
