The Police in Limpopo have made a significant breakthrough following the arrest of a 44-year-old male suspect in connection with an attempted murder incident related to the violence that occurred during political party campaigns at Juju Valley in Seshego policing area on Sunday, 19 May 2024.
The suspect, Jossey Modikane Buthane, a member of one of the involved political parties was arrested on Friday morning, 24 May 2024, in connection with the attempted murder of a 25-year-old man who was shot during the incident.
He appeared before Seshego Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 24 May 2024 facing a charge of an attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He was granted bail of R5 000.00 and his case was postponed until the 2nd July 2024 for further police investigations.
The incident resulted in a 9-year-old girl sustaining gunshot wounds. Cases of malicious damage to property, robbery, and contravention of Sec 87(1)(f) of Electoral Act 1998, amongst others, are still under investigation.
The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has welcomed the arrest of the suspect and commended the investigating team for the remarkable breakthrough.
“The police will continue to uphold the rule of law and order, thus protecting the democratic rights of all citizens to vote in a safe and secure environment. The police will act harshly against anyone who conducts himself or herself with impunity irrespective of social standing,” said Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe.
Meanwhile, the police are continuously monitoring closely the areas identified as hotspots to respond to any emergencies or threats that may arise during this heightened election period.
